Religious Arrogance & Prejudices
by beauty of wisdom
It sometime amazes me how we tend to self
describe ourselves as religious, as if that automatically makes all
that we do, say and think acceptable. Somewhere in the midst of our
spiritual journey we forget that we are still on the journey and we
begin to think that we have secured some special quality that allows
us to rest just where we are.
So often the place that we choose to rest, happens to
be so close to where we began, and the limited progress that we’ve
made tend to reflect in the continual things that we do, say and
think. We see ourselves looking outward, as opposed to inward. We
find ourselves expressing judgment and critiquing others as if we
have somehow become a spiritual authority on all that there is and
all that there will be to come.
I personally found myself to be in this exact place of
rest so many years ago, and rested there for many years until by the
grace of GOD I was able to see my reflection in my experiences. One
day, I visited a Christian website and wanted to become affiliated
with the website. As I began to peruse the site I noticed that they
sold something called Dhikr beads, which are a string of 99 to 100
beads used by Muslims to keep track of recitations.
I became alarmed that this supposedly Christian site
would be carrying such a thing.
I was offended and felt that it was my duty as a Christian resting
on my path to confront the owner of this site. I sent them a message
stating that after careful consideration and finding that they sold
other religious products, that I did not want to have anything to do
with them. I was exceedingly confident that my letter would make
them remove such products from there site.
A few days later I received a short and very pleasant
letter expressing that once I take leave from my rest and begin to
move further into my journey I will begin to understand that there
are greater things to learn about GOD whom is love. As I begin to
learn and move closer to GOD, I will ultimately move though biases,
prejudices, superiority, arrogances and ultimately Islam phobia. Who
would have guessed that I would learn so much as I moved out of my
place of rest.
